FIFA has decided: the 2027 Women’s World Cup will be in Brazil.

The decision to host the 2027 World Cup was made this Friday.

For the third time in history, Brazil will host a  World Cup . This Friday (17), during the FIFA (International Football Federation) congress, in Bangkok, Thailand, the Brazilian candidacy surpassed the joint proposal presented by Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands and was chosen to host the women’s edition of the tournament in 2027.

In total, 207 associations affiliated to FIFA were able to participate in the vote. Brazil received 119 votes, against 78 from Europeans. The election was the 11th item of the event fee , which started at 11pm (Brasília time) on Thursday (16). The result was announced at 2:51 am (Brasília time, 12:51 pm local time ).

It will be the first time that the Women’s World Cup will be held in South America. The legacy left by the 2014 World Cup was important in Brazil’s favor, especially the stadiums built for the occasion.

“Congratulations to Brazil. We will now organize the best World Cup in history in Brazil”, said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

In a report published by football’s highest entity just over a week ago, in which the entity evaluated the main aspects taken into consideration when choosing the venue, such as stadiums, layout and media , the country achieved a score of 4, in a ranking of 0 to 5, while the joint European candidacy received 3.7.

The ten stadiums nominated by the Brazilian candidacy, which were built or renovated to host 2014 World Cup games, received a score of 3.7. The 13 stadiums in European countries received a rating of 3.4.

Brazil entered the dispute with the cities, and their respective stadiums, of Belo Horizonte (Mineirão), Brasília (Mané Garrincha), Cuiabá ( Redondel Pantanal), Fortaleza (Castelão), Manaus ( Redondel Amazônia), Porto Prazenteiro ( Beirada – Rio), Recife ( Redondel Pernambuco), Salvador ( Manancial Novidade ), São Paulo (Neo Química Redondel ) and Rio de Janeiro (Maracanã) – the Rio stadium was indicated to host the orifice , on June 24th, and the final, on July 25th.

Beirada -Rio , from Internacional, is among those affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. So far, the possibility of a replacement has not been discussed.

In his speech after choosing Brazil, Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the CBF, mentioned the tragedy caused by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul and promised that the state will receive a means of developing football for women.

“The tragedy and catastrophe due to climatic conditions in Rio Grande do Sul, where many lives were lost and many families are homeless. This achievement here today, of Brazil hosting a women’s World Cup for the first time , we want the work that will be developed to also strengthen women’s football in Brazil , South America and, mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, where there should be a great means of developing women’s football”, said the director.

For Valesca Araújo, responsible for planning the event’s infrastructure and operations, the use of the country’s main stadiums drives the development of the sport. “It is important to take women’s football to the best stadiums and training centers we have in the country. Once you enter these spaces, there is no reason to turn back ”, she stated.

Valesca declared that, despite the long distances between each of the venues proposed by Brazil, a regionalized calendar was presented for each group of the competition. “The calendar takes into account the climate of each region for the comfort of the athletes and the size of the trips, for environmental sustainability.”

The main expenditure for the World Cup will be on temporary structures.

With the use of these arenas, according to the project presented to FIFA, the main expense for the 2027 tournament will be on temporary structures, such as the erection of tents to receive guests and press and to hold meetings.

According to the calculations of the Brazilian candidacy, these expenses should total US$ 13.3 million ( around R$ 65 million). The financing, again, according to the project presented, will come through partners and sponsors from FIFA and the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), without the use of public funds.

There will be ten Brazilian cities that will host the 64 World Cup games . In 2014, there were 12 municipalities. The reduction aims to reduce travel and improve logistics for teams and fans.

In addition to the World Cup a decade ago , in recent years Brazil has hosted the Pan American Games, in 2007, the Olympic Games, in 2016, and the Copa América, in 2019 and 2021.

The world’s highest football body also took into account the federalist government’s support for Brazil to host the competition. In the understanding of the Ministry of Sports, an event of this magnitude represents an instrument to give visibility to women’s football in the country and expand its development.

In Thailand, the representative of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was the Minister of Sports, André Fufuca (PP-MA).

The CBF also considers the event an opportunity to expand possibilities for girls and women who are considering a course in football.

“This FIFA decision announced tonight will have a major positive impact on Brazilian women’s football and on the lives of millions of women in Brazil. In addition to investing in the World Cup , the entire productive dungeon of women’s football in Brazil and South America will take an immense leap in development”, stated Ednaldo Rodrigues.

The women will have the chance to achieve an unprecedented feat for the country, which has never won a World Cup as host. In 1950, the Brazilian men’s team lost the decisive match to Uruguay. At the 2014 World Cup, they placed exclusively in fourth place , after a historic defeat against Germany in the semi-finals, 7-1, and a new route in the dispute for third place, against the Netherlands, 3-0.

The women’s team is still looking for its first trophy. The best result of Brazilian women to date was a runner-up, in the 2007 edition, when they were surpassed by Germany, in the edition held in China.

It will be the tenth edition of the Women’s World Cup . The first was in 1991, in China, which also hosted the event in 2007. Other countries that hosted the World Cup were Sweden (1995), the United States (1999 and 2003), Germany (2011), Canada (2015) and France (2019). In the most recent edition, Australia and Novidade Zealand organized the championship jointly, in 2023.

Last month , the United States and Mexico withdrew from participating in the dispute to host the World Cup in 2027 and are expected to present a new joint candidacy for 2031.

The North Americans are the biggest winners of the competition, with four titles. Germany has two, while Norway, Japan and Spain have each won one title.
